A little info on Meditation

www.jenniferhester.comThe new trend we all here about is not so trendy after all. Meditation has been around for thousands of years tracking back to the Hindus in 1500 BC. You can check out more info on the history of meditation here.

Meditation has at times received a bad name due to Christians being led to believe that if we get still and begin to meditate that we will be invaded by evil spirits. Actually we are told in the bible to meditate on God’s word. Go here to check out where meditation is encouraged in the bible.

For me I have tried off and on to get quiet and meditate. I have some ADD so I can be all over the place in my mind when given the chance. Does anyone know that feeling? However I have continued to persist in my challenge to meditate because I love the scientific data that is backing up the benefits of meditation and I want in on some of these benefits. I mean who doesn’t need better attention, immune function, positive emotions, self-control, and peace. For more info on the benefits look here.

I tried a couple different apps on my phone and the one that I am now using that seems to be fitting for me is Headspace. You can read more about it here. I’m not an affiliate for Headspace but I am loving what I’m getting from this app and so I wanted to share it with my readers. I have come to look forward to my meditation as it used to be a chore that I did not care for. I mostly look forward to the sense of peace that I have when I’m done. It is definitely valuable for anyone wanting to enhance their self-awareness as well.

Live a warrior life!

There are some days that I feel like I can take on the world, then there are other days when I just want to pull the covers back up over my head. When I wake up in the morning, more times than not, the negativity begins. The overwhelming list of to do’s, should have’s, and you’re not good enough’s start in. If I go a few days and don’t feed my mind the right things it will be a full out uphill battle to kick the negativity, but if I stay on top of my daily routines then the battle is much easier. What I continually feed my mind will automatically start to surface.

If I allow the outside world to determine my thoughts and emotions, I know what kind of day I’m going to have. A negative beat myself up day. When I start off right away being thankful for all that I have, before my feet ever hit the floor, then I get ahead in the battle for my mind.

Once my thankfulness is in order, I get my coffee, grab my books, and dive into battle mode. Directing my thoughts to higher things takes me away from the negative. Yes, I am aware that I’m not perfect, but I am persistent in my pursuit of being my best self. Yes, I am aware that I am not the highest educated person around, but I read daily to increase my knowledge. I long to be in warrior mode because I have lived the majority of my life in coward mode. For me, warrior mode is far superior because I am not hiding anymore. I love this authentic life. I want you to love your authentic life.

This week, wake up every day and prepare for warrior mode. Feed your mind, body and spirit the warrior meal plan. Get excited about being you!! Don’t live the status quo life. Break the bad habit of worry!!!

Being happy is a choice. We can choose to worry about things we cannot control or we can choose to let them go. Worrying about tomorrow and what it might bring is a waste of time and is a happiness stealer. Matthew 6:34 tells us “Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own”. Many will say this is easier said than done and I agree, but worrying is a bad habit.

Breaking bad habits will take some work, but it’s worth it. Understand this is a bad habit and we are in the process of changing the bad into good. We can choose every day to get up and be thankful for all we have. I have made this a habit in my life. Before I get out of bed, I thank God for all the many wonderful blessings that are in my life.

I have found that the morning is also a time when I seem to be bombarded by worries and thoughts of negativity. I have to ask myself, “Is this something that I can do something about or not?” If not, I have to give it to God and let it go. If I can do something about it, then I need to be proactive. I need to first pray for guidance, then get busy working through the issues.

This process frees my mind to be happy. Let go of the junk and hang on to the good. I understand that happiness typically depends on my circumstances while true joy depends on another level of understanding and relationship with our higher power. Today I choose to be happy, but I will also continue to seek joy from my higher power.

Tomorrow when you wake up and your mind takes off with all the worries of today or past regrets of yesterday, stop your mind. Literally tell it to stop. Redirect your thoughts to thanking God for all of your blessings. Yes you have many blessings in your life if you stop and look for them. Just look around, you can find many others who are suffering more than you. Count your blessings, be thankful for them and then give your struggles over to God. Just for this day let him worry about them while you enjoy the day.

So my post this week is not really a post, but two questions. Give the answers some thought this week and leave me a comment with what you discover.

1. Do you think positively or negatively most of the time?

2. Why?

You will have to pay attention to your thoughts this week to get the answer. Don’t just shoot from the hip, really pay attention to your thoughts. What do you think when you open your eyes in the morning? Is it positive or negative thoughts? What do you think when there is a line at lunch? What do you say when someone gives you a compliment? The answers to these questions will give you insight into your thoughts. Be sure to ask yourself “WHY” do you think the way you do for even more insight.

When you wake up in the morning, what are the first thoughts that go through your mind? Are you being thankful for the day or are you starting to think about all the things that need to be accomplished? The habits that we create are going to create a path of success or lead to a life of status quo.

The need for new habits

When we wake up in the morning and we allow our mind to be filled with the worries of the day, the week, or even the month, we are setting ourselves up for failure. Worrying is a habit that we have allowed ourselves to create over time. Worrying is stealing our time and future. The very first thing we should do when we wake up in the morning is think of 3 things that we are grateful for in our life. This will get our mindset on the positives in life instead of the negatives.

Create new habits

Instead of worrying, we should be spending this time learning or creating. Don’t sit and worry about things that you cannot control, this is a waste of our valuable time. Let’s make new habits. The next time thoughts start to creep into your mind that are going to try and steal your time, kick them out by listening to a podcast that is creative and positive.

If you are not a podcast listener, then pick up a good book, or go for a walk. While you are walking pay attention to the trees and birds. Try to notice your surroundings, this is called being mindful. It’s about being in the here and now. Spend this time thinking of creative ways you could increase your learning. Take a college course, sign up for a yoga class, learn about meditation, do something that will stimulate your mind and take your mind off the worry.

Worry is a self-defeating habit. If you must worry then set a clock and allow yourself 15 minutes to worry, then stop and get on with your day. If we are to be successful and become everything God designed us to be, we are going to have to quit worrying and make other more productive items our priorities.

Instead of worrying, go out today and share how AWESOME you are with the world. Be an example to others of what a worry free (at least worry less) life looks life.

The benefits of gratitude

Do you wish you had a more positive outlook? Do you find yourself gravitating toward the negative? There is a way to swing the pendulum. Begin each day with gratitude. Gratitude is the awareness of the good things in our life.  We often allow our situation to draw us into a negative mindset. Even in a negative situation, we can still focus our thoughts on the positives in our life. Yes, we do have to make difficult decisions at times, but we don’t have to allow that to put us in a negative mindset.

Positive mindsets and thankful attitudes are a habit. It is a choice we get to make every day. You can check out this article from Harvard Health Publications to give you some ideas on how to start cultivating a grateful attitude.

Not only does a grateful attitude give you a great outlook on life, but it is also very good for your health. Those who are more grateful have lower stress and a better immune system according to this article from webmd. Stress in one of the largest contributors to heart disease. You can make a decision today that will begin to lower your heart disease risk and you don’t even have to get off the couch.

I love the power of gratitude. I know first-hand the tremendous effect gratitude has on my mindset when I start to see things in a darkened light. If you say that you just aren’t made that way, I say that it is a conscious decision we can make today to create a new habit. You can begin to instill a new gratitude habit today and do yourself and your body a world of good.

Confidence through the eyes of a child.

This weekend I took my two youngest children to an annual street festival that our hometown puts on. It is filled with bad for you fried food, rides, games, and music. We got our annual funnel cake which is nothing but fried batter topped off with powdered sugar. A donut on steroids basically. The richness along with the grease weighs heavy on the stomach, so a few bites is all that is needed before the stomach cries uncle.

As we sat and ate on our nutritious void treat we discussed the events of the day. My two youngest, Emily and Andrew, are 12 and 9. They love the games at these festivals and both are extremely competitive. Emily had just one the last game they had played. That’s when the boasting began. Emily made the comment that she wasn’t sure who was going to win as it was a close game. Andrew chimed in to say that no one really thought he would win except the most important person, “me”. At that moment I thought what an amazing young man. He was expressing confidence in his self when no one else did. If only, if only, we all had this kind of confidence what amazing things we could accomplish.

I am proud of all three of my children. They are all unique and beautiful in their own way. I hope and pray that they all carry Andrew’s confidence in themselves which will allow them to follow their dreams if life. What about you?
