The other night I went to watch my youngest daughter play basketball for her school. Unfortunately, the other team was not very experienced and it made for a lopsided game. My daughter is the starting point guard for her team. When our team pulled ahead and we had a comfortable lead my daughter was pulled from the game, which is the right thing to do. As I watched I noticed that the point guard that was now playing was not fully utilizing that position as a leader. Without some form of leadership on the court, it suddenly turned chaotic. This was my first lesson learned, that we need leadership in everything we do or chaos follows.
Second lesson learned was that because of the comfortable lead we had, the players were not being challenged. By not being challenged they were losing an opportunity to learn and grow. When we are put under the gun and are forced to make decisions we begin to grow. This is when we find out what we are made of.
The third lesson was passion sometimes beats talent. For some of these girls this was the first time they had ever played in a organized basketball league. Even though they didn’t have the fundamentals down yet their passion for the game and their competitive spirit truly showed. They were trying harder than some of the others who had been playing for years and making good plays.
So in summary, our three lessons are: Passion can outshine talent, leadership is needed in everything we do, and we need to be challenged to grow. Are there areas in your life where you could implement these three lessons this week? Leave me a comment and let me know if you agree or disagree, I would love to hear from you.
